Where Paths Converge

Program Notes

Where Paths Converge is inspired by San Diego, a city defined by movement and connection. Every day, people cross its borders with their own languages, stories, and history. Over time, these journeys have shaped San Diego into the vibrant, layered city it is today.

The music tries to capture that feeling of movement and change. The harmonies shift and evolve, meeting and transforming along the way, much like the experience of travel itself, full of unexpected turns and moments where different paths cross. As the music unfolds, contrasting sounds gradually find new common ground, reflecting the way people from all over the world bring their lives and cultures into a shared place.

The piece interacts with live electronics processing realized in Max/MSP, which generates evolving textures that alternately merge with and diverge from the acoustic material. At times dissolving into the instrumental sound, at others pulling away to assert its own presence, this fluid interplay between convergence and separation mirrors the work's broader themes of encounter, exchange, and the negotiation of difference.

In the end, Where Paths Converge is about what happens when many different paths meet in one place. It is a piece about San Diego, about borders, and about the idea that our differences do not divide us, but bring us together.
