Program Notes
“530.623” explores the distinctive timbral qualities of the violin, viola, and clarinet. The interplay among the instruments is dynamic and spirited, marked by playful exchanges that can shift from contentious to amicable in an instant. Despite its technical demands, the piece’s core intention is to celebrate the distinct sonic identities of each instrument, ultimately blending their diverse sonorities to create a harmonious and evocative musical experience.

Background
Composed in 2004, “530.623” is a trio for violin, viola, and clarinet, crafted specifically for the New Chamber Music Class—aptly reflected in the work’s title. The class, a collaborative initiative led by cellist Michael Kannen, head of the Chamber Music Department at Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, brought together elected performers and composers. These artists formed ensembles and engaged with assigned composers, who were tasked with writing a complete composition within a span of approximately four weeks.
